Doncaster Chamber responds to US Tariff threats

Doncaster businesses face renewed uncertainty following the latest wave of US tariff threats, with local leaders warning that the news could further weaken confidence in the region’s economy.
The United States has announced tariffs targeting countries it perceives as obstructing their Greenland strategy. While no measures have yet been implemented, the threat to exported goods is enough to unsettle local businesses already operating under challenging conditions.
South Yorkshire’s latest Quarterly Economic Survey results show a sharp decline in involvement with overseas markets in the latest quarter with many reporting that export sales have plummeted. The Doncaster Chamber warns that in these fragile conditions, the latest news can only spell bad news for investment, hiring, and local growth.
“The US remains a key market for Doncaster companies, particularly in advanced manufacturing, engineering, and specialist production,” said Head of Policy and Partnerships, Sian Booth. “Even the threat of tariffs makes businesses pause, slow investment, and rethink expansion plans. For companies already dealing with rising costs and supply-chain pressures, this adds a further layer of uncertainty.”
Local exporters are not the only ones affected. Suppliers, service providers, and logistics firms that support these industries could also face reduced demand or delayed contracts.
The Doncaster Chamber is calling on the UK government to engage urgently with international partners to reduce trade tensions, protect exporters, and maintain confidence in the region’s businesses.
“Our companies have worked hard to recover from past economic challenges,” Ms Booth added. “We need reassurance that they can continue to access overseas markets without the threat of tariffs undermining their competitiveness.”
