City Status
Doncaster Chamber is proud to have played a central role in the campaign that led to Doncaster being officially granted City Status in 2022, a landmark moment for the borough.
As a key partner in the bid, the Chamber worked alongside Doncaster Council and a wide network of organisations to develop a compelling, evidence‑rich application as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours competition. This demanding process required the submission of detailed material showcasing Doncaster’s unique identity, heritage, culture, transport links, and thriving business community.
The Chamber contributed extensively to shaping Doncaster’s story: from documenting its rich industrial heritage and royal associations to demonstrating the strength and ambition of its business ecosystem. These efforts were part of a wider collaboration involving public, private, voluntary and community partners across Team Doncaster, all united in making the case for why Doncaster deserved this prestigious civic honour.
The campaign also benefited from business‑led leadership within the Chamber, including bid direction from Jim Carley, Vice President of Doncaster Chamber, who played a vital role in crafting the successful submission. His expertise in proposal writing helped ensure the bid was meticulously prepared and strategically positioned.
When Doncaster was officially named a city in May 2022, the Chamber celebrated the outcome as a transformative win for the region. City status brings stronger national influence, increased prestige, and new opportunities for inward investment, enhancing Doncaster’s ability to attract skilled workers, secure major projects, and amplify its voice at a national level.
The Chamber continues to champion Doncaster’s growth as one of the UK’s newest cities, working with partners to ensure the status unlocks long‑term economic, cultural and reputational benefits for the region.
