When Michael (Mick) Bates suffered a tragic accident three years ago resulting in him losing a leg, he didn’t expect that he’d end up training to try and get into the GB Paralympic team.

Now two Doncaster businesses are backing Mick and offering him support to help his training and his bid to get onto the team.

Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) have welcomed Mick onto their Talented Athlete Support Scheme (TASS) which gives him free access to DCLT’s fitness venues to aid his training and Doncaster Deaf Trust, where his wife works, have set up an appeal to fundraise for him.

Mick, aged 43 from Doncaster said: “I’m extremely grateful to both DCTL and Doncaster Deaf Trust for the support they are offering me.

“I never thought that at my age I’d be getting faster in my sprinting, especially now that I only have my left leg.

“Obviously the accident was horrendous and to receive injuries that result in the loss of a limb is hard to come to terms with.

“But here I am three years on. Fate intervened and I was spotted running by professional coaches and despite being in recovery and having an ill-fitting false leg I was running close to record speeds.”

With their help and support Mick got blades and took part in the Warrior Games in Colorado competing in the 100m, 200m, wheelchair basketball and powerlifting. He picked up a Bronze medal in the 200m.

Michael Hart, chief executive from DCLT said: “We are pleased to be able to welcome Mick onto our TAS scheme.

“The scheme was set up in 2012 to support local athletes who represent Great Britain at a national or international level and those operating at the top of their chosen sport.

Mick has now reached the performance limits of his current blades. He is raising money for a pair of professional running blades to help him to reach greater speeds and to compete at the highest level.

Alexis Johnson, executive principal of Doncaster Deaf Trust said: “When we heard Mick’s story we just wanted to help.

“We know that our students will be inspired by his story of his achievements despite his disability and want to help him to continue on his journey and reach his goal of representing the country in the Paralympics..”
