    CPI inflation in the UK stood at 2.4% in September 2018, down from 2.7% in August. The largest downward contribution came from food and non-alcoholic beverages where prices fell. Other large downward contributions came from transport, recreation and culture, and clothing. In the three months to July 2018, the number of people in employment fell by 5,000 on the previous three-month period. Average weekly earnings (excluding bonuses) rose by 3.1%, up from 2.9% on the previous three-month period. UK retail sales decreased by 0.8% in September 2018, but were up by 1.2% on the three-month-on-three month measure.

    Public sector net borrowing (excluding public sector banks) in September 2018 was £4.1 billion, £0.8 billion less than in September 2017 and the lowest September borrowing for since 2007. Public sector net debt stood at 84.3% of GDP in September 2018.
