Campaign to Encourage Support for Doncaster Armed Forces CommunityFebruary 14, 2019Doncaster residents are self-identifying as having served in the forces as part of a week-long campaign to encourage those within the Armed Forces community to access dedicated support, activities and services.
The campaign will see a number of community drop-ins across the borough where current or former serving residents can access face-to-face support with their wellbeing, as well videos shared on social media featuring residents and local veterans’ charities talking about their services.
This comes as more organisations in Doncaster are moving towards increasing their support for residents who have served, including Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust who have recently launched their Armed Forces discounts for fitness and leisure activities. Doncaster Council signed the Armed Forces covenant in 2011, committing them to ensuring the right support and fair treatment for the Doncaster Armed Forces community and their families, and local partners, charities and organisations come together regularly to identify and tackle issues affecting current or former serving residents.
Councillor Paul Wray, who is the Armed Forces champion at Doncaster Council said: This campaign is designed not only to raise awareness of what support, social activities and services are out there for former and current serving men and women, but it’s about reminding the whole of Doncaster that those who have served in Armed Forces, their family and their friends are all around us. We need to ensure that whatever they need to live a happy and independent life, whether that is support with their physical or mental health, a way to meet other people who have served, or help with issues such as housing and finance, it is available to them.”
A new, dedicated page on the Your Life Doncaster website hosts a wealth of information and signposting to local and national support, services, charities and social activities, helping with areas such as physical and mental health, housing, employment, relevant discounts, to find social groups and more, at www.yourlifedoncaster.co.uk/armedforces
