Sheffield Hallam University has been named 'Best Educational Institution' by TIGA, the independent games association, at an awards ceremony in London.

The announcement was made at the 2018 TIGA Awards, which celebrate the best in creativity, innovation and business in the UK games industry.

The award recognises Sheffield Hallam's games courses for being world leading, having strong links with industry, and resulting in high proportions of students going into graduate level jobs, beating eight other shortlisted universities.

The University boasts its own in-house game studio Steel Minions, who were the developers behind Piecefall, the first PlayStation®4 game created through the PlayStation First programme in 2015. Since then they have released two more PlayStation 4 titles including The Chantry for PlayStation®VR as part of the Horizon 2020 REVEAL project.

The TIGA Award is the latest success story to come from the course. Earlier this year, Hallam's collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe was shortlisted for 'Most Innovative Contribution to Business-University Collaboration' at this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) Awards, with the winner due to be announced at the end of November.

This year, the MComp Computer Science for Games course was celebrated by the University for achieving 100% overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the fourth year in a row.
Since 2011, the University has also hosted Games Britannia, one of the UK's longest running videogame education festivals.

The University were also part of the team that helped to bring The National Videogame Museum to Sheffield, which is due to open later this month.

Dr Jacob Habgood, reader in game development and director of the Steel Minions studio, who was at the ceremony to receive the award, said: "We're hugely excited to have won TIGA's Best Educational Institution award. It means a great deal to  have recognition for all the hard work put in over many years by the dedicated teaching team at Sheffield Hallam, as well as the many achievements of our talented graduates.

"We, as an institution, are proud to have one of the best computer games courses in the country and it means a lot for this to be recognised by the industry itself."
Sheffield Hallam University is a driver of economic growth, addressing long-term challenges, attracting investment and narrowing the skills gap within the region and beyond.
