Gritters out in force in cold weatherNovember 18, 2019Doncaster Council's gritters have been out across the borough signalling the start of the winter period.
The gritters will, throughout the next five months, treat up to 330 miles of gritting routes when necessary - regularly getting their fill of rock salt stored at the Council's North Bridge depot - in an effort to keep as many roads and footways as safe as possible when the region experiences icy conditions.
Residents within the area can keep up to date through the Council's social media account @MyDoncaster which will provide local gritting updates, winter safety tips and more.
For commuters who travel to other parts of south Yorkshire such as Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley, the #SYgrit hashtag has also been agreed to help people stay informed when travelling from A to B.
Doncaster council Assistant Director of Environment, Gill Gillies, said: "When the thermostat drops to around freezing temperature, it is the signal for us to click in to gear.
"We'll be out in all weather and at all times of day to keep people moving.
"Last year was a touch on the mild side by the standards we've come to expect in recent years but the gritters still went out a total of 40 times.
"You’ll be aware that we’ve had a lot of rain lately so roads may be wet and therefore icy so, as always, we would encourage people to take care when travelling in colder weather by whatever mode of transport. Always leave plenty of time to get to your destination in adverse weather."
