First South Yorkshire set to launch Tap & Cap in DoncasterSeptember 25, 2019
First South Yorkshire has today announced the launch of a new ticketing trial from Sunday 29 September making using the bus simpler & quicker as well as providing the best value for customers.
‘Tap & Cap’ technology will be trialled on a 6-month basis offering customers capped fares (within Doncaster) via their contactless card or enabled device. ‘Tap & Cap’ uses contactless payments to cap travel charges, so customers will never pay more than £4.70 a day or £16.50 per week, no matter how many journeys they make.
Single journeys made with ‘Tap & Cap’ will cost a flat £2 so customers don’t need to ask for a ticket or tell the driver where they’re travelling so long as it’s within the Doncaster boundary. A second journey is charged at an additional £2 and the third is capped at just 70p taking the full price to the same as a day ticket - £4.70. Any additional journeys made that day are free! If a customer continues to tap throughout the week the cost of all their journeys would be capped at £16.50.
In partnership with payment platform provider Littlepay, customers using ‘Tap & Cap’ can travel with complete peace of mind with access to the self-service portal which tracks payments and shows the savings made.
As part of the changes on September 29, mobile ticket prices will be aligned with other payment options so Day and Week prices, including ‘Tap & Cap’ are consistent. This means the mobile Day ticket (currently £4) will be available at £4.70 and the mobile Week ticket (currently £15) will be available at £16.50 – still cheaper than in 2012.
Following the introduction of ‘Tap & Cap’, the Doncaster week ticket will no longer be available on-bus from 27 October to help speed up journeys for customers by reducing boarding time. Other channels will remain available and additional outlets will be added from November including Payzone outlets.
Please note all other ticket prices unchanged and customers can continue to use contactless ticketing as normal.
Allan Riggall, Commercial Director at First South Yorkshire, said: “We’ve had a lot of success encouraging customers to pay digitally using contactless cards and mobile devices for ease and convenience. To build on this and keep improving journey times, our ‘Tap & Cap’ initiative offers even more flexibility and value for customers – particularly the new £2 flat single fare.
“This new initiative ensures customers will always get the best value fare to suit their own travel needs and will continue to help speed up bus journeys by reducing boarding time. We will be monitoring the results of the trial closely and hope to extend the initiative further across the City Region.”
Littlepay CEO Amin Shayan, added, “First Bus recognises that cost, convenience and comfort are crucial to a great passenger experience. To make it simple for passengers to pay fares by tapping a reader with their contactless card or enabled device, it chose to use Littlepay's contactless payment processing platform across its entire UK fleet of over five thousand buses.
"We're delighted First Bus is now using our technology to enable flat fare capping on services in Doncaster, helping to provide yet more value to customers. With daily and weekly caps automatically applied to fares, many will see their costs reduced without any effort needed to pre-plan ticket purchases."
