School children are to be given the chance to learn essential skills to boost their chances of finding work at the award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

The sessions for secondary schools and colleges focus on employability skills through a fun interactive session.

YWP Education Manager Jade Bancroft said:” We are really excited to be holding these sessions at the park. Feedback on the initial sessions have been overwhelmingly positive.

“We really think it is vital to equip those close to seeking employment with relevant skills.”

The academic session includes links to the objectives set out in the Gatsby benchmarks and enables careers connections to be made across the entire academic curriculum.

The sessions include various activities which aim to give students a range of different key transferable skills such as: teamwork, problem solving, leadership, organisation, presenting and confidence.

Sessions include a presentation and video on careers at the YWP, ice-breaking activities, team challenges, and speed interviews.

The day of activity concludes with each student carrying out their very own SWOT analysis.

Sessions are run at the park and last for around 3 hours, ensuring there is still free time to explore what the rest of the park has to offer.

The sessions have been road tested on two local schools as part of the development process. 100% of teachers whose pupils have taken part in the session agreed the activities are a great gateway towards work for their students.

One teacher said, “Fantastic, great presenting staff. Students were extremely engaged and have had a very enjoyable and educational day at the park. Many thanks!”

90% of students that took part said they enjoyed their day and that it gave them confidence going forward in the world of work.

“We had great opportunity to develop skills we don't always use such as organisation and teambuilding,” said a student after the session was completed.

Each session allows a max of 20 students and costs £150 excluding admission fees.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has developed a series of vocational sessions for older students using the skills of managers from the different businesses and disciplines within the Wildlife Park.

The Education team at the Park provide sessions and school visits for students from nursery to university level.
