Doncaster cyclists pedal the width of the UK for charity
A team of seven cyclists from Doncaster have pedaled the width of the UK on a coast to coast bike ride to raise essential funds for charity.
Ian Wood, director at facilities management company Signum FM and chairman of Doncaster’s Round Table, embarked on the challenge with his fellow Round Table members, in a bid to raise vital funds for Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support.
Ian was joined on the journey by Richard Watson, Andrew Booth, Jason Clegg, Glen Siviter, Chris Morrey and Peter Caswell, travelling 140 miles across the British countryside, from St Bees in Cumbria to Sunderland, over three days.
Ian Wood, director at Signum FM, said: “We’re proud to have completed the coast to coast cycling challenge. It was an exhilarating adventure and really tested our fitness! However, what we’re most proud of is raising money for Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support.
“The charity provides essential support to cancer patients by offering free transport to Weston Park Hospital for their treatment. It’s an important cause for our area and we’re proud to support it.”
During the pandemic, fundraising for the Doncaster-based charity has dropped significantly and with around £1,000 per week in fuel costs alone, fundraising is a welcome contribution. The Firefly Express fleet is run by a team of volunteer drivers.
Ian Bacchus, trustee and director at Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support, said: “Thank you to everyone that took part in the coast to coast bike ride, it’s a fantastic achievement.
“Firefly is very humbled by the team’s support and we cannot thank each rider enough, especially during these demanding and uncertain times.
“Every penny raised goes directly back into Firefly and helps maintains the fleet of vehicles to continue to take cancer patients from the borough of Doncaster for life saving treatment in Sheffield.”
