Doncaster Skills Academy
The idea behind our Doncaster Skills Academy is to connect the skills needed by local employers with the skills of young people leaving the school system. This is crucial to both supporting young people make the best employment choices for themselves, and for the benefit of local businesses and the wider economy.
The Doncaster Skills Academy was created by the Doncaster Chamber in 2014, in response to feedback from the local business community, concerning difficulties they were facing in the recruitment and retention of skilled staff.
To help address this ‘skills gap’, the Doncaster Skills Academy set about to better equip schools and their young people with the skills and information they require when entering into the world of work.
To date the Academy has supported 17 Doncaster secondary schools, over 20,000 students, and worked with over 300 businesses volunteers to deliver the project.
The Doncaster Skills Academy team, and the wider business community, deliver interactive and insightful delivery sessions in local schools aroudn four key areas:
- Awareness and aspirations
- Employability and work readiness
- Financial awareness
- Enterprise and commerciality
We were the first Chamber in the country to be granted Investment in Young People accreditation to recognise the work of our Doncaster Skills Academy and the support given to preparing young people for employment. Several other Chambers now offer some ‘bridging the gaps’ activity which aims to improve links in their own communities between schools and businesses, however the Doncaster Chamber was the first Chamber to develop and implement a full service offering for schools and has been praised by the British Chambers of Commerce and used as a best practice example to others in the network.
The Doncaster Skills Academy team consists of qualified Business Advisors and colleagues with years of experience working with businesses in the local area. The team have worked with hundreds of local businesses in a variety of sectors and sizes, from entrepreneurs to national companies, to develop the Doncaster Skills Academy into what it is today.
The Doncaster Skills Academy is owned by the Doncaster Chamber and is supported by the Edge Foundation and Doncaster Council.
