The Chamber and Yorkshire Bank will be hosting a teleconference seminar on 8th October 2010, to discuss investment in China: “Is China at a crossroads for foreign investors?”
There have been some recent “scare stories” about China’s turning away from its long-standing policy of attracting foreign firms and turning instead to restrictions on foreign firms together with the encouragement of domestic (particularly State-owned enterprises) to compete with foreign firms.
In addition, some other countries look attractive in previous “China territory” – other countries including Vietnam are increasingly viable alternative locations. Parts of China are now congested, increasingly expensive in operational terms and less welcoming to foreign investors.
We hope this will provide a useful context for the visit of a trade delegation to Doncaster from Shuangliu in December, when local businesses will seek to discover mutually advantageous economic opportunities with our Chinese colleagues.
The event will be hosted by Brian Colquhoun, Regional Director, Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks and our guest speakers are:
Peter J. Buckley BA (Econ), Professor of International Business and Director of the Centre for International Business, University of Leeds. Peter will use his leading experience of international trade in China, and exclusive Changjiang Scholarship at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) Beijing, to highlight the emerging benefits and pitfalls of foreign direct investment in China.
Giles Blackburne, Director, Yorkshire & Humber, China-Britain Business Council. CBBC offer practical services to British companies wishing to export goods and services, to invest in or establish manufacturing under license arrangements with China. Giles will discuss the work of the CBBC and how they assist British companies to grow and develop their business in China.
Following the teleconference presentation, the panel will participate in a Q&A session and will answer any questions.
