Top Class Construction from Glass Facades Fabricator

The Mayor of Doncaster, Mr Peter Davies and Andrew Webb, Key Account Manager at Invest In Doncaster discovered the calibre of Doncaster’s own businesses during a recent visit to building facade fabricator Norking Aluminium Ltd and aluminium profile supplier Senior Architectural Systems.

The visit was by invitation from Norking Aluminium Ltd after managing director, Graeme Gibson, felt that local businesses were being overlooked in the Council’s procurement processes.

Norking, which employs over 100 staff from its 30,000 square foot site at Balby, has fabricated the structural glazing, facades and windows at some of the most recognised construction projects in South Yorkshire. The glass facade of Doncaster airport and the multi million pound redevelopment of Doncaster racecourse were both the work of Norking.

As a substantial provider to the regional economy, Norking felt that, whenever possible, the Council should be encouraged to award contracts to local companies and wanted to make sure that the skills and facilities it had to offer were not overlooked.

During the tour of the design and production facilities at Norking, Mr Davies and Andrew Webb met the staff including some of the 36 NVQ trained fabricators in the aluminium fabrication division. Mr Davies expressed his admiration for Norking’s investment in its staff and for the fabricators who had worked hard to achieve this qualification which was, for some, their first formal qualification.

Following Peter's visit everyone agreed there is a fresh opportunity to work more closely with first class local companies like Norking. It was acknowledged that there is more that can be done to inform the local authority procurement teams about what is available on the doorstep in Doncaster and Peter Davies reiterated his objective of more work for local businesses.
