The Sheffield College is pleased to be working with Assessment North East, to bring you an update on important changes in equality and diversity legislation that will affect you as an employer and a provider of services, goods, facilities or works.
The Equality Act 2010 became law in April 2010. During 2011 'general' and 'specific' public sector equality duties and lengthy, statutory Code of Practice, covering service provision and employment, have also come into effect.
So...
If you provide services, goods, facilities or works to, or on behalf of, the public sector, currently - or aspire to - you will need to familiarise yourself with the public sector equality duties and understand how they may affect you and what action you might need to take to demonstrate compliance with the legislation.
The statutory Codes of Practice make it clear that the employer is liable for any acts of discrimination, harassment or victimisation committed by their employees, whilst in the course of employment, unless the employer can demonstrate that they have taken all "reasonable steps" to prevent such acts occurring in the first place.
Register for one of our 'free-to-attend' equality and diversity awareness raising events and gain a greater understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and it's employer and service provision implications.
The event will help you:
Familiarise yourself with the 'general' and 'specific' public sector equality duties;
Understand how they might impact on your business;
Gauge how the public sector might look to you, as a supplier or sub-contractor, to help them comply with their duties
Appreciate what the recommended "reasonable steps" details in the Codes of Practice actually are and understand how they apply to you as an employer - whether you are in the public sector supply chain or not!
Conduct an equality and diversity diagnostic to aid development of action plans to ensure that you take and evidence those "reasonable steps".
