A report published today by Doncaster Chamber of Commerce reveals that 35% of businesses in Doncaster feel that they are being held back by a lack of skilled staff and 36% have to recruit outside of Doncaster in order to find the skills necessary for the position.
Commenting, Daniel Fell, Head of Policy at Doncaster Chamber said:
“This report offers some worrying statistics. In times of economic hardship, where demand for jobs is soaring, to have local businesses struggling to recruit from within the borough clearly demonstrates the weakness in Doncaster’s economy – skills.
There is however, cause for optimism. A staggering 62% of Doncaster businesses would employ a candidate who had been out of work for 6 months of more. 92% of businesses would recruit from inside Doncaster if the correct skills were available. The skills survey, which attracted close to 1000 responses from our members, is able to pinpoint precisely where demand for jobs will be over the next 4 years and the precise nature of the skills required, sector by sector.
We welcome the progressive attitude shown by our partners DMBC, Doncaster College and the Learning and Skills Council, in supporting this piece of research which will allow tailored education provision in the borough - based on private sector demand – for the very first time.”
Commenting, Rosie Winterton, Doncaster Central MP said:
“The skills agenda is one that carries prominence across the country, but particularly here in Doncaster. Youth unemployment figures are at a record high and all signs point to this figure still increasing well into the New Year. It is of utmost importance that all in Doncaster work together in order to provide students with the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.”
