Opus Raise over £40,000 to Support Earthquake Victims in Christchurch

Global infrastructure consultancy, Opus International Consultants with offices in Doncaster has set up an earthquake appeal fund for victims following the February earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. The company has, so far, raised over £40,000; this includes a significant company, as well as employee contribution.

Opus has a dedicated earthquake response team working in Christchurch. There are 230 professional staff on the ground and nearly 40 engineers, technicians and other experts assessing the safety of key buildings and critical infrastructure damaged by the earthquake. Opus has brought in experts from across New Zealand and Opus’ international network, including the UK, to support the response team.
UK based senior engineer Jack Shepherd was in Christchurch assessing the safety of earthquake prone structures following the September 2010 earthquake when the 2nd quake struck; Jack reported “No-one was expecting a second quake of this magnitude, our focus immediately changed to the response effort and I was involved in inspecting priority buildings for key clients and staff homes”.

Jack is part of a growing response team deployed to Christchurch by Opus.  The UK has sent almost a dozen engineers from across the country with more scheduled to fly out over the coming months.
