Keeping kids active and healthy

A housing organisation is helping to keep young people in Conisbrough active and healthy.

Housing organisation St Leger Homes of Doncaster has teamed up with three housing contractors to sponsor a sports initiative which will deliver 1385 hours of sport and physical activity to around 1500 children. The activities are being carried out by Dinnington-based company Active Regen (SY).

Active Regen’s sports team will be visiting Balby Street Primary, Conisbrough Ivanhoe Primary, Conisbrough Station Road Primary, Morley Place Junior and Rowena Infant schools.

They will carry out sporting lunchtime sessions with the pupils, PE sessions during school time and provide after school clubs. The aim of the programme is to get the young people participating in a sustained period of physical activity.

The scheme will be trialled initially in Conisbrough for six months, and depending on the success, may extend into Doncaster town centre. It will use sport and activities to address issues such as poor health, obesity, crime and the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour. The programme is currently supporting the Tom Hill Youth club on a Tuesday evening between 5pm and 7pm and also delivering outreach activities on Thursday evenings on the Welfare Field across from Gardens Lane, Conisborough between 5pm until 6:30pm.

Besides working in school, Active Regen will also be providing activity plans for a 50-plus group and a disability group in the area. Some multi sports sessions will also be run during the school holidays to keep young people in the area busy which may also help to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The summer multi sports holiday programme will be held at Morley Place Junior School between the 26th and 30th July between 10am and 3pm, to book your place call 01909 564352.

There will also be the opportunity for up to ten young people from comprehensive schools in the area to take part in a 12 month period of volunteering as part of the sports and physical activity programme.  Volunteers will have the opportunity to gain accredited qualifications including the Community Sports Leaders Award or the ADSAN Level 1 in sport and fitness.

St Leger Homes – the organisation that manages around 21,000 homes for Doncaster Council – has teamed up with contractors Bramall Construction, Wates Living Space and Henry Boot Construction, who are carrying out improvement work on council houses in Doncaster, to sponsor the initiative.

Rob Sleight, of St Leger Homes, who is helping to organise the initiative, said: “St Leger Homes is not just about providing bricks and mortar. We want to play a bigger role in the community. These activities will help to build confidence and fitness.

“Active Regen have run a similar scheme to this in Maltby, Rotherham, and it has been successful. We have decided to trial this in Conisbrough because we identified a need through consultations with local residents.  Hopefully the young people will love these activities which will lead to a life long love of sport and keeping fit and healthy.”
