Hollyoaks stars score a victory for local charity

A team of stars from the hit soap Hollyoaks secured victory and more than £14,000 for a local charity after a thrilling football match at Keepmoat Stadium.

Led by Captain Nick Pickard, who plays Tony Hutchinson, the Hollyoaks lads defeated a team of Hallam FM allstars 3-2 to lift the inaugural Cash for Kids Cup.

A crowd of 2,500 attended the match, which raised money for Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity. Based in Sheffield, the charity supports sick, disabled and deprived children across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands.

Both teams were treated to the complete match day experience at the spectacular 15,000 capacity stadium, home of Doncaster Rovers – using the official changing rooms, walking down the tunnel and playing in front of a passionate crowd.

Steve Beard, who plays Archie in Hollyoaks, and has played at Old Trafford and Wembley, said: “Out of all the charity games I’ve played in this is definitely the nicest ground I’ve been to. The surface is unbelievable and there was a really nice good crowd here.”

Nick Pickard added: “It is a beautiful stadium and the pitch looks great. It’s been fantastic to play at the Keepmoat.”

Nico Mirallegro, who plays Newt, scooped the man of the match award and Hallam FM’s Jonathan Tyrell picked up the goal of the match prize. Every player also collected an individual medal.

As well as witnessing an exhilarating match, spectators were given pre-match and halftime entertainment and players stayed to sign autographs for eager fans after the match.

Shane Chalmers, chief executive at Keepmoat Stadium, said: “We were delighted to host the Cash for Kids Cup and it was a fantastic day for everyone involved.

“All the players relished playing in a state-of-the-art stadium. The match was played in a great spirit, there was nothing but blue skies all day and a superb amount of money was raised for charity.”

Katy Winterschladen, acting charity manager for Cash for Kids, said: “I’d like to say thank you so much to everyone who supported the event. With people’s help, we will continue to make a significant difference to thousands of the area’s most needy children.”
