GAMES-BASED REVISION TOOL COULD IMPROVE EXAM RESULTS BY 25%

A unique games-based revision system designed to boost exam performance is being made available to consumers for the first time.

I Am Learning @ Home, created by Doncaster firm I-education, is set to revolutionise the way pupils study for GCSEs and Key Stages 1-3 – by reducing exam stress and making revision fun and engaging.

According to an independent report by C3 Edcuation, 81% of students and 79% of teachers who tested I-education’s classroom-based version of the product, I Am Learning – which utilises the same software – said the tool would improve their exam results.

So successful were the trials that six out of ten students surveyed thought just three hours per week interacting with I Am Learning was enough to increase their grades by as much as 25%.

76% of the 3,120 students who responded to the survey thought three hours per week would produce at least a 10% improvement in their results.

According to Mike Wilkinson, of I-education, the latest home-based software has been designed to allow children access to the system outside school to help them prepare for the exam season.

He said: “Students learn by selecting the subject they want to study and then navigating through a reward-based virtual world by answering questions. Getting questions right means they are rewarded by moving up to the next level of the game, or by getting to unlock other games.

“All the evidence shows I Am Learning encourages deeper learning and better recall than books or other online resources, but now, with the release of I Am Learning @ Home, students are able to access it from outside the school environment.”

To encourage continued development students can compete against one another as part of a global league table of users. Their performance can be tracked and analysed and reports accessible by parents and teachers pinpoint subject areas in need of improvement.

Distinguished educational technologist Professor Stephen Molyneux said the system had the “potential to motivate and engage a new generation of learners.”

He said: “The approach used by I Am Learning (and I Am Learning @ Home) blends traditional question based assessment with computer games-based motivational techniques. Add to this a rich high-stakes data analysis and reporting engine and you have an online testing and assessment system that is a must for those wishing to explore a new, innovative way to raise student's attainment.”
