First of five primary schools to be refurbished

Doncaster’s £10.8million government funded primary capital programme will see modernisation work starting at Kirk Sandall Junior School in March followed shortly by four other junior and primary schools.

Kirk Sandall Junior School will benefit from a £1.7million renovation including a new multi-purpose sports hall. George Hurst and Sons Limited is the principal contractor for the works which should be complete in September 2011.

Saltersgate Junior School and Town Field Primary School will each benefit from a new multi-use hall and modernisation programme, while Carcroft and Owston Park Primary Schools will be significantly refurbished as part of the plans.

These five schools were identified for early priority in the council’s Strategy for Change document. The key principles of Doncaster’s Primary Capital Programme are to reduce surplus places, improve the condition and suitability of buildings, raise educational attainment and help tackle deprived areas.

Adrian Bagnall, Headteacher at Kirk Sandall Junior School, said: “The pupils, staff and friends in our community are thrilled about our build and recognise how lucky we are to be one of the few projects still going ahead.

“At Kirk Sandall Junior School, we are proud of our achievements in sport, music and drama but have always found our hall far too small. Now, not only are we getting the new school hall we have been seeking for so long, we are also going to have a new library, music room and kitchen. We are sure it will be a real asset to the whole community.”

Councillor Andrea Milner, Doncaster Council’s Cabinet Member for the Children and Young People’s Service, Equalities and Cohesion, said: “I am delighted work to improve Kirk Sandall Junior School is about to start. The primary capital programme will see significant investment in five of our primary and junior schools helping to create the right environment for our young people to receive a world class education.”

Norman Fanthorpe, Director of George Hurst and Sons Limited, said: "George Hurst are delighted to have been awarded the construction contract and are looking forward to working closely with the school and the council's school rebuilding team to deliver these improvements."

The primary capital programme is being delivered by the council's school rebuilding team. The design and procurement process for Kirk Sandall Junior School was managed by the council’s technical services department.
