Efficient wind turbine a new incentive for farmers

Farmers and landowners diversifying into renewable energy are being offered a better return on their investment by a Doncaster engineering firm.

Harbon Wind Turbines, an offshoot of the long-established electrical engineering family firm H S Harbon & Sons, has developed a new turbine designed to maximise output by coping with varying wind speeds.

By altering the rotor speed according to wind conditions, the turbine is able to generate electricity in a wider range of conditions than most of its rivals.

Harbon has also teamed up with Leeds-based specialist electrical engineering distributor Scattergood & Johnson to provide a sophisticated touch-screen monitoring system for the HWT 60 turbine.

The wide-screen EXOR UniOP panel displays live information on wind speeds, rotor speeds and power output and can be accessed via the internet from anywhere in the world, by computer or smartphone.

Harbon’s first turbine has been installed on a farm on the outskirts of Doncaster owned by customer and business partner Richard Crowe and is performing well.

“A lot of people in the agricultural world have been waiting for the right product to come along and now we are able to offer a solution,” says director Dave Harbon.

“Wind turbines represent a diversification for farmers and landowners and also for our business. We’ve been working in the agricultural sector for many years, so it’s a logical progression.”

He adds: “Our turbine is British-built and hopefully it will allow us to generate new jobs in addition to providing a good return for our customers.”
