Doncaster's Responsible Retailer Award

Doncaster Council will be rewarding a wide range of local businesses with Responsible Retailer status in recognition of their efforts to prevent the sale of age-restricted products such as lottery tickets, alcohol, tobacco, fireworks, solvents, knives, DVDs and videos to young people.

Piloted in 1999, the Responsible Retailer Award scheme is run by the council in conjunction with multiple partners including the Doncaster’s NHS South Yorkshire Police South Yorkshire Fire Services and others. The project provides friendly training courses, accredited by the Trading Standards Institute, to offer businesses advice on legislation and best practice around the sale of age-restricted products. This is supported with practical help and advice to ensure that businesses are operating within the law.

The scheme has been so successful that the model has been adopted by over 50 other local authorities across the country.

Nearly 100 local hotels, pharmacies, public houses, off-licences, supermarkets, newsagents and garages did gathered at a special awards presentation on 12 November 2009 to celebrate their efforts to reduce the sale of age-restricted products to underage customers.

Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, who will be attending the presentation said, “Any scheme that puts a stop to young people accessing products that aren’t suitable for them and which often lead to anti social behaviour has 100 per cent backing from me. I am delighted that companies of all sizes, from independent sole traders to branches of large national chains, have all benefited from working with the council on this important issue.”
