The Doncaster Council led Southern Gateway Improvement Scheme along the A6182 White Rose Way has secured £9.7million of funding from the Government.
The first phase of works on this key gateway into and out of Doncaster is already underway and will see a new bridge lifted in over the East Coast Main Line at Christmas.
This important contribution towards the second phase was one of just 20 schemes approved by the Department of Transport.
Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “This announcement is wonderful news for Doncaster. This shows the benefit of strong lobbying of Government Ministers to ensure they understood the economic importance of this project for the town. I am delighted all our hard work has paid off.
“Improvements to this key gateway will create the right conditions to attract new investment, create jobs and boost the local economy. Everything is starting to come together and we have a bright future to look forward to.”
Subject to securing further funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) this next stage of improvements would start in spring 2012. Once both phases are complete by March 2013 the whole route from Junction 3 of the M18 into the town centre will be dual carriageway, while the Potteric Carr and Ladybank roundabouts will become signalised junctions. These improvements will increase road capacity, reduce congestion and improve journey times along the route.
To date the project has benefited from £4.6million of investment from the ERDF as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme. News about a further ERDF funding bid to support the second phase of the scheme is expected shortly.
Doncaster Council’s Transport and Accessibility team has led on the development of the White Rose Way scheme, pulled together and submitted funding bids and are managing the project.
