Doncaster regeneration boosts local commerce

A number of Doncaster-based companies have been awarded supplier contracts to facilitate the delivery of two of the town’s major regeneration projects.

After tendering for and winning work packages, these local companies will play their part in the construction of Doncaster Council’s £20m new civic offices and the new £10m Campsmount Technology College.

The contractor appointed to build both schemes, Wates Construction, has worked in partnership with the council’s Invest in Doncaster team to ensure local companies have had the opportunity to tender for the available contracts.

Doncaster’s Danum Windows Ltd and its supplier, Senior Architectural Systems, are amongst the local businesses that have secured work for the projects. Both companies are now set to contribute to the construction of the new Campsmount Technology College, with a contract value in excess of £500,000.

Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, commented: “It is good to see local companies beating off the competition to win some of the work contracts. I am a strong advocate of local work for local people and seeing Doncaster companies and residents working on some of the town’s big regeneration projects is superb. Further opportunities will become available as the scheme progresses.”

Dave Price, Business Unit Director for Wates Construction, Yorkshire, commented: “These are two considerably beneficial regeneration schemes for Doncaster, and it is fundamental to use these projects as a catalyst for boosting the region’s employability. It has always been a priority for us to use our presence in Doncaster to benefit the local economy, and this is the first of many ways in which we aim to do that.”

Nick Woodcock, Director of Danum Windows Ltd, commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded the glazing contract for the new Campsmount Technology College.  We are extremely pleased with input from Doncaster Council in pushing for local business to carry out work on local major projects.  This is a significant order for our company in the current economic climate, which will help secure our continued growth.”

Mark Wadsworth, from Senior Architectural Systems, said: “Our window and door systems are installed in major projects throughout the UK and abroad, but we are always proud to work alongside other local businesses and the council. With so many members of our workforce living in Doncaster, it is particularly satisfying that local money is being retained in the town, helping us and others to sustain local jobs.”

The contracts have come as a result of a Meet the Buyer event, held by Wates in partnership with Invest in Doncaster in January. The event provided local businesses with information on the projects and the chance to become part of the construction process.

Other local companies that will complete work for the projects include scaffolding company, SYS Ltd; commercial cleaners, Solutions 4 Cleaning; Belle Vue-based catering company, Needful Things Catering and Rossington-based FCY Ltd. All of these companies will be involved in the construction of the new civic offices.

Further opportunities will be available as the two projects progress and other elements of Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter (CCQ) start, including the town’s first public square and much awaited new performance venue.

Part funded by the European Union as part of the European Regional Development Fund, the CCQ is being delivered by Doncaster Council and its development partner, Muse Developments.

The new Campsmount Technology College is being delivered by Doncaster Council’s school rebuilding team, with support from The Department for Education (DfE).

Invest in Doncaster is promoting further work packages amongst the local business community and can be contacted on Tel: 01302 737 447.

The CCQ project is supported financially by the European Union, as part of the European Regional Development Fund’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.
