Doncaster Concert Band is soon to bring some European culture to the borough in their upcoming exchange with musicians from Music'All, in Limonest in Lyon, France. Thanks to notable organisations such as Doncaster Jazz Association, the two towns have developed international links for many years and now Doncaster Concert Band and Music'All are set to continue the partnership.
During their 4 day visit to Doncaster, the musicians will rehearse together during their stay and work towards performing 2 concerts on their final day and evening. One of which will be a special daytime concert at South Yorkshire Wildlife Park on 16th April. The band has strong ties with the park after sponsoring one of the two lions in their first year at the park as a gift and thank you to Music'all for hosting the first exchange between the two groups when Doncaster Concert Band visited Limonest in April of 2010.The music repertoire will be varied and lively, including well known contemporary tunes to suit the visitors to the Wildlife Park. The band will be playing to visitors to the park between 11am and 2.30pm. The second concert of the day will take place in the evening at the Earl of Doncaster hotel and will have a different programme, including the performance of the Schumann Conzertstuck for 4 french horns featuring soloists from both bands. This will take place at 7.30pm with tickets £5 for adults, £3 for concessions
‘It’s brilliant to have the chance to go to another country and not only emmerse yourself in another culture and see how they do things differently but also to start building lasting relationships with like-minded individuals. As a band, we perform regularly around the region but partnerships like this allow us to do something different and build a higher profile not just for ourselves but for Doncaster as a whole,’ says Louise Bond, a band member. ‘We get a lot from our visits and the French really enjoy coming to Doncaster and getting involved in Yorkshire culture such as sampling local foods and visiting the fabulous surrounding areas. It will be great to show them what fantastic attractions we have in the borough and I think they'll really enjoy the time at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park’
A charitable organisation, Doncaster Concert Band was founded by local musicians looking for somewhere to perform. The band was set up with an ethos of producing great music while socialising and enjoying friendships with local people at the same time allowing the chance to give something back to the community. The band are now in their 18th year and continue to delight audiences with performances at indoor and outdoor events around the region including performing at St Georges Minster for the Armed Forces day, village festivals and events, as well as performing annually in aid of Help For Heroes. Donations made at these events are split and go towards maintaining the band as well as supporting other local charities. Their chosen charity this year is the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.
