Home -> News List -> Critical bridge lifts completed on White Rose Way
The final critical beam lift was completed at the weekend (28th and 29th January) as the Doncaster Southern Gateway Improvement Scheme along White Rose Way gets back on track.
Lifting in the final centre span beam was the sixth of nine required lifts, but the last of the important lifts over the East Coast Main Line.
The remaining three north side lifts, which do not span any railway lines, will take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings 1st, 2nd and 3rd February. Bracing work to strengthen the bridge will be carried out during the next two weekends. All work is subject to appropriate weather conditions.
Road closures will be needed as follows:
Wednesday 1st February to Thursday 2nd February (9pm to 6am)
Thursday 2nd February to Friday 3rd February (9pm to 6am)
Friday 3rd February to Saturday 4th February (9pm to 6am)
Saturday 4th February to Sunday 5th February (9pm to 8am)
Saturday 11th February to Sunday 12th February (9pm to 8am)
Sign posted diversions will be in operation during the works.
Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “Tremendous credit must go to the project team who have worked tirelessly to overcome the problems and delays created by the poor weather. This road improvement scheme will enhance Doncaster’s infrastructure and stimulate further economic growth so it’s great news that everything is getting back on track.”
The new bridge should still be open for traffic in November 2012.
Site clearance works are also being undertaken along White Rose Way as preparations start for the second phase of works. Trees and vegetation will be removed around Ladybank and Potteric Carr roundabouts, in front of Potteric Carr nature reserve and alongside Lakeside Village.
This work is taking place between 30th January and 10th February 2012 and will see lane closures and traffic management measures in operation.
The low quality vegetation will be replaced with an enhanced landscaping scheme as work on the project progresses.
The Doncaster Southern Gateway Improvement Scheme is supported financially by the European Union. To date, the project has attracted £4.6million of investment from the ERDF as part of Europe’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme. This programme is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government
Doncaster Council’s Transport and Accessibility team has led on the development of the White Rose Way scheme, pulled together and submitted funding bids and is managing the project.
In December 2011, the council received confirmation that the Department for Transport would contribute £9.7million of funding towards the cost of the second phase. The full scheme will see the completion of dual carriageway along the A6182 from Junction 3 of the M18 into the town centre. Subject to additional ERDF funding being secured, the second phase should start in spring 2012 and be complete in summer 2013.
