A team of celebrity all-stars and ex-Doncaster Rover players took to the pitch to play against local primary school teachers with the goal of raising money for a children’s charity.
TV stars Marquelle Ward from musical drama Britannia High, Lee Otway from Hollyoaks, Will Rush and Tom Milner from Waterloo Road played alongside Mikey Fisher – freestyle world champion and Stephen Nicholas from the Damned United in the football match held at the Keepmoat Stadium, in aid of the NSPCC Child’s Voice Appeal.
The famous faces were joined by a selection of ex-professional football players including Leo Fortune-West, John Buckley and former Rovers manager Dave Penney, while the opposing team was made up of teachers from a range of Doncaster Primary schools including Kingfisher, Pheasant Bank, Bentley High Street and Saltersgate.
The teams played in front of an electric crowd of almost 4,000 at the charity event, which raised over £17,000 – with some contributions still left to be added.
Making sure the teachers looked the part was local company Kat Communications who sponsored the red and white, Rovers style shirts for the game.
Anthony Temperton, managing director of Kat Communications, based in the Wright Business Centre, said: “We were delighted to be able to get involved in the charity match. It was a fantastic sporting spectacle that raised a huge amount of money for a very worthy cause.”
The final score was 6 – 1 to the all-stars but the game wasn’t without its controversy as one of the teachers took a tumble in the box on the 65 minute mark, and was rewarded with a penalty…giving the teachers their only success of getting the ball past Lee Butler – Former Aston Villa goal keeper who had a great game!
Lee Otway, star of Hollyoaks said: “When I was originally asked to take part in the charity match, it was a no brainer! I totally support the NSPCC and think they are a fantastic charity for all they do – not only for Doncaster’s young people but for children living right across the UK. It was an honour to be asked to play at such a well supported event in an incredible venue with the best atmosphere ever!”
Kat Communications has been involved since the start of the NSPCC appeal in Doncaster which is aiming to raise a whopping £50,000 this year.
The company recently supplied a Satellite phone and a special ‘text to donate’ number for the fundraising Inca Trek team which includes Mark Wilson, James O’Connor and James Coppinger from the Doncaster Rovers. The technology from Kat Communications will enable the players to keep in touch with the club on their trek through Peru with a team of intrepid hikers in June.
Later this month Anthony Temperton of Kat Communications will be donning his own kit as he takes part in the first ever Doncaster Cup – another charity football match, but this time between Doncaster business professionals.
To donate to the Inca Trek appeal text ‘INCA’ to 70777. Texts cost £1.50 plus standard message rate. (At least 100% of Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile & Virgin, 99% of O2 and 95% of the 3 networks, will go to the charity.)
