Doncaster’s award winning IT support service provider, ACS, reveals that it has secured a contract with Digital City Region (DRBSY Limited) to deliver the first superfast broadband to over half a million homes, 40,000 businesses and public sector services across the region.
The partnership will see ACS deliver the next generation of broadband to the region, with guaranteed download speeds of up to 40Mb per second. Upload speeds will be up to 10Mb, ten times the speed of standard broadband. The impact of superfast broadband will add huge benefits for local businesses and schools in particular. These include greater use of the internet to source information, improved processes, download services and applications, at the same time as using connection for phone calls, video conferences or backing up data.
ACS will use a mix of technologies, including fibre optic connections, wireless and satellite in place of the current system, which is based on copper wire. These technologies will be able to deliver significantly higher bandwidth than the broadband currently available.
ACS director, Mike McEwen, commented:
"We are absolutely delighted that DRBSY has chosen to partner ACS with this £1 million communication investment programme.
“ACS’s track record of delivering large-scale IT networks and communications projects to 200 local schools and over 600 businesses, means we are best placed to provide South Yorkshire with this next generation level of broadband. With our guaranteed level of service, this provision of superfast connection broadband will completely transform the areas communications.
“The majority of homes, businesses and schools in South Yorkshire will benefit enormously. Superfast broadband packages start at as little as £30 per month, with no more worrying about slow internet connections, this really will place the region at the forefront of technological change.”
George Taylor, founding partner and CEO of DRSBY added:
“We have an extremely powerful capability available exclusively to South Yorkshire, now we need to take advantage of it. We are delighted to be working with ACS, together we will be able to put the region at the cutting edge of digital technology.
“The impact of this rollout will be far reaching, not only will it increase access to a whole range of business, education and public sector services, it will generate new job opportunities for the region.”
Dan Fell, Doncaster Chamber of Commerce’s head of policy, said:
"This is an enormous opportunity for Doncaster and South Yorkshire. It is important that local companies, of all sizes, now start thinking about how their business could be transformed.
"Partnerships like the one between DRBSY and ACS will help businesses to cut costs, create new products and services, exchange significantly larger amounts of information, and in some cases, completely change the way they operate.
"We now need to kick start a debate about what next generation broadband will mean in practical terms for businesses across South Yorkshire whether they work in retail, construction, healthcare, manufacturing or any other sector, to ensure that Doncaster can get the maximum economic return from the project."
