50 German music-makers swing into Hill House School

Pupils at Hill House School, Doncaster, got into the swing of things when they welcomed a mass musical invasion by a German youth orchestra (Monday 5th July).

More than 50 jazz and swing musicians from the Erich Klausener School in Herten in Westphalia (Doncaster’s twin town) performed a lively concert at the school and had lunch with the pupils at the start of a visit organized by Doncaster Youth Jazz Association.

Young musicians from Doncaster and Herten have been on exchanges between the two towns each year since 1994, and this is their first visit to Hill House, where Music Director Damian Bell said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the orchestra came here. We have a strong musical tradition at Hill House with a jazz band of our own plus a school orchestra, five choirs, and clarinet and saxophone ensembles as well as soloists, and we had a wonderful time listening to our German counterparts.”

Mr Bell is a long-standing member of Doncaster Youth Jazz Association and has helped bring the Herten group, where every student plays an instrument, to Hill House.
