Platform 51 Doncaster Women's Centre and local yarn and haberdashery store Knit & Stitch have teamed up to offer a series of upcycling workshops at the Centre.
Knit & Stitch have put together a series of Meet & Make sewing workshops on Tuesday mornings from 10am until 12.
National Charity Platform 51, formerly the YWCA, supports girls and women from all walks of life as they take control of their lives. The Meet & Make group in Doncaster is about what women want, giving them a chance to meet other like minded people, upcycle, and sew beautiful new personalised products in a comfortable and safe environment.
Tutor Rebecca Miles of Knit & Stitch is keen to teach others that making beautiful handmade items to wear or for use in the home can be achieved without costing a fortune by simply looking around and using things no longer needed.
At the first workshop participants made flower brooches from scraps of fabric. Rebecca commented “This was a great first session with the group; we demonstrated what could be achieved from fabric bound for landfill and some basic sewing skills” adding “one of the students told me she couldn’t even sew on a button, yet she produced a beautiful handmade brooch!”
Meet & Make takes place at Platform 51, Doncaster Women’s Centre, 21 Cleveland Street, Doncaster. Each class costs £4 and takes place every Tuesday from 10am-12 noon. To book a place or for more information, contact Lilian Beckingham on 01302 309800.
